Our next bachelor is Four from Divergent by Veronica Roth and the amazing Jessi from The Elliott Review was kind enough to host him. Take a look at why you should love Four too:
Reasons to Love Four from Divergent:
or, Why Four is Number One
I love the premise of having all the hott guys of literature compete with one another. There are so many tempting options out there. I chose to represent Four from Divergent because, as it stands now, I love him enough that he just might be able to take down my favorite YA literary guy of all time (not telling who). It remains to be seen if this will happen, but I'm thinking it looks pretty likely. Why? Well..... [mild spoilers]
1. He's hott!
This is basically the thesis of this entire post. It's an undeniable fact that who he is is - wow! It's not so much that I fell in love with a particular description of what Four looks like. Four's allure and charm and worthiness as the most amazing YA bachelor are due to his actions and who he is as a person. These will be discussed in greater detail in the following points. It was difficult for me to find an actor to "cast" as Four for this post, but I decided that Jensen Ackles, though maybe a bit too old, conveys all of the quiet (but bad-a) bravery and understated kindness that are both a part of Four.
"I hear my heartbeat. I have been looking at him too long, but then, he has been looking back, and I feel like we are both trying to say something the other can't hear, though I could be imagining it. Too long - and now even longer, my heart even louder, his tranquil eyes swallowing me whole."
Any literary guy worthy of my attention has to have this factor. I am a Byronic Hero lover regarding literary guys, but in real life I am all about the sweet guy who would do anything for you. Four is the perfect mixture of both of these things. He has darkness and pain in his past that affect him in the present time, but he is still a man who can function in society and be there for his woman. You can sense that there is pain there, but he can still kick anyone's butt, can still be powerful and helpful and would only show this to the right person. He's the type you could trust with your life but who just needs a little hug at the same time.
3. Empowers his woman
YA lit has scores of heroines that are helpless and need their man to help complete them and rescue them. I'm not saying I always dislike those heroines, but Tris is a strong, strong girl who brings a lot to the table. She doesn't need anyone to rescue her - she can get the job done herself. She's not a broken piece missing her other half; she's a a whole individual with another whole individual. It takes a strong man to be able to handle a strong woman.
"Who is he when he isn't Dauntless, isn't an instructor, isn't Four, isn't anything in particular?
Whoever he is, I like him. It's easier to admit that to myself now, in the dark, after all that just happened. He is not sweet or gentle or particularly kind. But he is smart and brave, and even though he saved me, he treated me like I was strong. That is all I need to know."
4. Is a leader
Four didn't become the trainer of the Dauntless initiates through inheritance or bribery. He earned it. Because of his skills, he was able to choose whatever he wanted to do. In addition to emphasizing his strength, it also shows that he is somewhat others-oriented because, as we teachers know, training others to reach their full potential is not always an easy road.
5. Kinda dangerous
Again, Four came out on top of his group of Dauntless initiates because he excelled. And to excel in a group of rough, courageous, bad-a people, he had to possess those traits himself. He had to beat all the others in tasks of bravery, including the one-on-one fights.
Best Quote:
"You think my first instinct is to protect you. Because you're small, or a girl, or a Stiff. But you're wrong."
He leans his face close to mine and wraps his fingers around my chin. His hand smells like metal. When was the last time he held a gun, or a knife? My skin tingles at the point of contact, like he's transmitting electricity through his skin.
"My first instinct is to push you until you break, just to see how hard I have to press." he says, his fingers squeezing at the word break. My body tenses at the edge in his voice, so I am coiled as tight as a spring, and I forget to breathe.
His dark eyes lifting to mine, he adds, "But I resist it."
"Why..." I swallow hard. "Why is that your first instinct?"
"Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up. I've seen it. It's fascinating." He releases me but doesn't pull away, his hand grazing my jaw, my neck. "Sometimes I just want to see it again. Want to see you awake."

Umm yes! This post is a perfect representation of why Four is so great. I never would have thought of Jensen as Four, but it totally works! A younger Jensen would have been awesome; good picture selection. =)
ReplyDeleteGah I adore Four, one of my top YA bachelors (after Valek from the Study series!!)
ReplyDeleteOMG. I love Four. Love is an understatement. He is unbelievable. Glad he made to your YA Bachelors! :D
ReplyDeleteLOVE this guy! He is an unlikely hero, subtle in his attempts to protect Tris on a physical, mental and emotional level. He does not shield her from the inevitable pain and suffering that goes with living a cut-throat Dauntless existence, as he understands the significance of Tris experiencing life in Dauntless for herself, the good and the bad. However, Four is there for Tris in the most critical moments. He believes in her ability to stand strong in the face of adversity and face her fears, all the while trusting her to do what is right, even if it is the more difficult and/or dangerous choice.
ReplyDeleteI love Jensen Ackles aka Dean to DEATH. But he's too old to be Four. Four is 19 =(
ReplyDeletePersonally I cast Shiloh Fernandez I think he's just sexy and dangerous looking enough ahaha
I really hope Veronica writes something from FOur's POV ^^
