Divergent by Veronica Roth
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Tris and Four have solidified their relationship. After embarrassing her in the fear landscape in front of everyone, Tris decides to be a bit reckless and goes to visit her brother against rules, carrying out the promise she made to her mother to have him research transmitting serums. When she arrives back Eric is waiting for her but before he can do any real damage, Four comes in and they are able to pass off Tris as a "silly girl". Afterwards, Four confides in her that he really does like her and is just trying to look out for her best interests by being indifferent to her towards the others so they don't think her ranking is because of her relationship.
The final test arrives and Tris faces seven fears in the fear landscape. One of the seven is intimacy with Four. After the test, Eric injects her with more serum, saying it's just a formality. Directly after, Four and Tris go back to his room where she divulges she is nervous and he confides that he feels the same way. During the final ranking ceremony, Tris comes in first in her class and kisses Four in public. She connects that the new serum is the way the Erudites are going to make them warriors.
That night, every Dauntless wakes and is in a trance-like state. They head to the Abnegation section and begin to slaughter the government officials and others. She finds Four who is awake as well because he is a Divergent too and they try to stop everyone but are caught. They confront Jeanine who gives Four a serum that makes him attack Tris. Tris is put in a room to drown but her mother breaks her free and confirm that she is also a Divergent and was born Daughtless. Her mother sacrifices herself so that Tris can live and get back with her family. Caleb has joined them after researching the serum and discovering the plan. With her family, Tris heads back to the Daughtless base and aims to take out the program.
After confronting Peter who demands to be taken with her, they go to the control room where her father sacrifices himself so that Tris can get in. Four is in there and attacks her but is able to wake himself up out of the trance and helps Tris shut down the program. Divergent ends on the train ride to Amity (the only safe place currently) with Four and Tris snuggled up together next to their enemies (Marcus (Four's abusive father) and Peter (her tormentor)) and Tris's brother Caleb. Two factions have fallen and Tris alone holds the motherboard that contains the program that could destroy them all. But at least Tris and Four have each other.Hopefully that is a good refresher for you and you feel caught up for the next novel in this amazing series! Did I miss anything important?
